Clinical information Central diabetes insipidus is the most common form of diabetes insipidus. It occurs due to reduced antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) secretion. In many cases the disorder is secondary to pituitary tumors, optic chiasm tumors (f. e. craniopharyngioma), optic nerve glioma, germinoma, hystocytosis, head injuries (broken bones of the skull base), and neurosurgery. Hereditary form of central diabetes insipidus arises from mutation in the AVP gene.
